Why does a gender pay gap still persist? In our 2013 survey , women were more likely to say they had taken breaks from their careers to care for their family. These types of interruptions can have an impact on long-term earnings. Roughly four-in-ten mothers said that at some point in their work life they had taken a significant amount of time off (39%) or reduced their work hours (42%) to care for a child or other family member. Roughly a quarter (27%) said they had quit work altogether to take care of these familial responsibilities. Fewer men said the same. For example, just 24% of fathers said they had taken a significant amount of time off to care for a child or other family member.

Women and Gender Studies was founded model of the “three-pronged” stool: teaching, research and activism. We offer an exciting array of classes, at both the undergraduate and graduate level that interrogate systems in inequality, including gender, sexuality, race, class, ableism, religion, and region of the world.  Our internationally acclaimed faculty have expertise in human rights, transnational migration, sexuality studies, disability studies, gender based violence, incarceration, minority and interracial families, health policy, environmental and ecofeminist issues, women writers, and masculinity studies.  We have partnerships with many community organizations including organizations that serve the trans community, LGBTQ youth, immigrants seeking asylum, campus outreach programs, prisoner re-entry programs and agencies serving families living with intimate partner violence.

The third year is devoted to writing up research for the PhD thesis. During this time, doctoral candidate will normally give a presentation to the Postgraduate Research Seminar, comprising a small number of staff members with special expertise in the topic and other research students. During this time candidates will present draft chapters to the supervisor(s) for comment, before writing the final draft for examination. The thesis – normally 80,000 words in length - will be examined by two leading authorities on Gender Studies or relevant disciplines/area studies. The external examiner is always a scholar from outside the University of London.
